UN Guidance For Effective Mediation
"Mediation is a process whereby a third-party assists two or more parties, with their consent, to prevent, manage, or resolve a conflict by helping them develop mutually acceptable agreements"
Practitioners should ensure the development of strategies based on a comprehensive conflict analysis and stakeholder mapping which includes the examination of previous mediation efforts
The mediator should not have a material interest in the outcome, should be able to talk with all actors relevant to resolving the conflict and provide a balanced process that treats all parties fairly
It is society as a whole that must work towards a peaceful future, therefore it requires adapting the mediation processes to local cultures and norms while taking into account international law
